MND News Report
Date: 09:30, October 26, 2024
Today (October 26), the Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed that the US Government made an announcement on October 25 (EST) regarding notifying the Congress on the sales of a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), and L-band and non-L-band radar turnkey systems to Taiwan – amounting to US$1.988 billion.
The MND pointed out that the US approved the sale of NASAMS due to the increasing Chinese military activity in Taiwan’s surrounding waters. The NASAMS possesses automated detection, fire control command, and intelligence integration capabilities, and will reinforce Taiwan’s overall air defense capabilities, as it has been tested in actual combats held in the Ukraine-Russia war. In addition, the two new radar systems will reinforce the ROC military’s ability to detect targets and counter jamming. With the addition of these armaments to the ROC military’s current arsenal of medium- and long-range missiles, national security can be ensured through the establishment of multiple air defense mechanisms.
The MND emphasizes that the US Government provides arms sales to Taiwan based on the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, thereby assisting the ROC military in strengthening its defensive resilience and maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific. The MND thanks the US for their support.
