Air force runway emergency repair training : simulation of combat to fortify the officers’ response (May 5th, 2015)

(Zhang Lizhen/ Feature Story)
To unify the emergency repair process of the runaway, the air force command especially learned from the American’s experiences this year – “The airport runaway emergency repair training.” TNT explosives were used to blow up the ground as to simulate the battlefield. This would train the officers and the soldiers to repair the runaway in the shortest period of time, which would be beneficial for the actual combat situation.
This year, “The airport runaway emergency repair training” was developed at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in the middle of April. It is estimated that by the end of June, six training would be held. In each of the trainings, two teams of airport runaway repair official would be on duty as to enhance the emergency response ability in foreign areas. Under this circumstance, the trainees could integrate learning, training and emergency operation into one. Lieutenant Colonel Cai, an instructor who was trained abroad, shared his experiences during the course. He had also participated in the repair practices. This would establish a new concept and fortify the combat capability among the officers and the soldiers.
During the training, the bomb disposal teams from the army were presence for coordination. By using TNT explosives, the runaways were damaged as to simulate the real battlefield. When Damage Control Center was notified with the information, all equipment was checked, while damage survey team went to the site to detect the damaged area and to investigate the damages and losses. It was also in charge to check unexploded bombs. If any unexploded bomb was found, the operation team should eliminate the situation within one hour. After the damage survey, the runway damages were reported to the Damage Control Center, which should then calculate the minimum operating strip. Emergency repair shall be carried out as to restore the landing and departing functions of the runaway.
The base drill was basically training for the officers and the soldiers to repair large craters in the shortest period of time. Following the Damage Control Center’s instructions, the crater operation tem shall fill the crates. The backhoes would eliminate the protruding, while the scrapers would clear the crates. The operation speed of the scrapers would determine the time to fill the crates, so to familiarize the management of the equipment is fundamental. Afterwards, the dumper would dump materials into the craters, and the graders and rollers would carry out the pavement compaction operations. After the completion, the flatness of the pavement shall be examined with gravity densitometer for soil density testing.
In addition, the emergency repair operation team would work simultaneously in the side. While the stacker and the personnel carry out glass fiber repair, the air compressor and pneumatic drill would execute rivet and bolt fixing operation. The stacker would assist the transferring of the glass fiber mat. In the end, the mat would cover the crates so that the aircrafts can take off and land as normal.
